NORTH MYRTLE BEACH — Newberry won the Bash at the Beach on Tuesday by one stroke over Charleston Southern, giving the Wolves their fourth tournament victory of the season and first win in a Division I event since 2010.

Newberry fired a two-over 286 on the final round, using Carlos Leandro’s par on the 18th hole to secure the one-shot victory. Leandro shared individual medalist honors with the Buccaneers’ Jacques Wilson.

The nine-team tournament, which was hosted by Appalachian State, included six Division I opponents. Fellow Division II schools Walsh and St. Anslem finished eighth and ninth, respectively.

The win gave Newberry its first victory in a Division I event since winning the 17-team Rutgers Invitational by 19 strokes in September 2010, a season in which the Wolves went on to finish tied for fifth in the nation at the Division II Men’s Golf Championships. The Wolves have now equaled the 2010-11 squad with their fourth win this season, tied for the most in school history.

Carlos Leandro continued his strong showing on Day Two nabbing Co-Medalist honors with a Charleston Southern’s Jacques Wilson. Leandro entered into a scorecard playoff with Wilson after a par on the 18th hole which pulled him back to even for the tie at first, but Wilson was declared the winner.

“A special congratulations to Carlos…his 4, 3 finish allowed us to creep ahead by the one shot margin,” Head coach Howard Vroon said. “The five foot putt he made, which was downhill and sliding to the right, on the 18th green was very impressive.”

Spencer Skiff finished Day Two one under but still secured the fourth spot on the leaderboard. His performance throughout the duration of the tournament nabbed him a seat in the top five continuously. Skiff posted seven birdies on the day to add to his successful score.

Harry Bolton battled his way back into the contest, rocketing up the leaderboard with two-under 69 to position himself seventh overall after ending the first round tied for 35th. His steady third round saw him par 15 holes.

Ben Thompson concluded his day at five over to finish in a tie for 33rd, while Rob Cull finished six over for the day in 41st place.

“Congratulations to these Wolves on a great tournament win…we were very tough. We gave up our lead and more on the front nine, trailing by at least four with nine to play. Then we dug in and came all the way back to win by one, that is some very tough and clutch playing,” said Vroon.
