GREENWOOD — Newberry came out on the wrong side of a back-and-forth affair with Lander Tuesday night at Dolny Stadium that saw 27 runs, 29 hits, 18 walks and 17 pitchers combined, with the Bearcats striking for five runs in the ninth to take a dramatic 14-13 win.

Newberry (3-4) got an insurance run off the bat of designated hitter Ben Herring, who lifted a leadoff home run to left field in the ninth inning that made the score 13-9. The Bearcats (3-3) scored five runs on three hits, a walk, and two hit batsmen for the come-from-behind victory. Second baseman Colton Yeager’s RBI single to center field provided the winning run.

Herring tied for the team lead with four hits on the day, finishing 4-for-6 with four runs scored and a pair of RBI’s. Second baseman Dalton Lansdowne also totaled four hits, officially going 4-for-4 with a walk, an RBI, and a pair of runs scored.

Lander led the Wolves 16-13 in the hit column and saw eight of their nine starters finish with at least one hit. Third baseman Bailey Connell was the only Bearcat without a hit, but reached three times on bases on balls.

Newberry took an early lead on a first-inning RBI single by Herring to plate Colin Allman before the Bearcats scored six times in their first three trips to the plate to take a commanding 6-1 lead.

The Wolves were far from done, beginning the comeback with an unearned run in the fifth and plating two more on a Tommy Passerello single to center and a bases-loaded hit by pitch by Danton Hyman.

Down four runs after a solo home run, the Wolves went to work in a five-run seventh that included three hits, an error and four walks. Two runs came around to score on a fielder’s choice by Tanner Lane with an error on the play. Lansdowne plated another with a double to left field before another double, this time off the bat of Hyman, scored two more.

Newberry maintained a lead the rest of the way before the Bearcats’ rally in the ninth. The teams combined to score in 13 of 18 half innings.

John Mason Reynolds, the 10th of 11 Newberry hurlers, suffered the loss to fall to 0-1 on the season. Ryan Flores was brought in after Herring’s home run and earned the win with one inning of work.

The Bearcats were able to score five runs in ninth inning to take home the 14-13 victory.
