NEWBERRY — The Newberry women’s lacrosse team opened their season at Setzler Field with a 18-8 mauling of the Koalas of Columbia College.

Rachel Dillon, preseason all-conference second team honoree, had four goals in the contest. Dillon ended the season last year averaging a little under two goals per game. The junior recorded all four of her goals in the first half of the game.

The Koalas (2-1) ran out to a 4-0 lead in the opening minutes of the first half, scoring each within about a minute of each other. The Wolves Naomi Killian opened up the scoring for the team with a free attempt shot that sailed to the back of the net. They would go on to score the next four goals to give them a 5-4 lead. Columbia College would score the next two goals to take a slight edge over the Wolves. Newberry railroaded on offense and would only allow the Koalas to score two more goals in the remaining minutes of the contest.

Newberry would end the game scoring the last eight goals, swarming the Koalas and holding them to only a few shots in the second half. Freshman Sophie Moore led the Wolves with eight shots and all but one being on goal. She connected with the net on four occasions and picked up seven ground balls. Killian tallied three goals and connected on all three of her shots. California native Brandy Bowman finished the game with nine saves.

The Koalas were led by Tiffany Tortorello who led all players with three goals, one assist and nabbed 11 ground balls. The senior went 6-for-7 in shots on the afternoon. Newberry also held the advantage shots, ground balls and draw controls.
