NEWBERRY — Newberry women’s head soccer coach, Deedee Alexander, has announced the signing of nine players for the 2018 season.

Alexander is coming off her fifth season with the Wolves where the team went 7-11. They completed the regular season with a 3-7 mark in SAC play to finish in eighth place. Newberry advanced to the first round of the South Atlantic Conference, but dropped to NCAA Division II runner-ups, Carson-Newman.

Sierra Chavez – D – Quartz Hill High School- Lancaster, Calif.

Chavez comes to the Wolves after being a member of the Quartz Hill High School girls soccer team. With the team, they went three seasons undefeated. Chavez and the Quartz Hill Rebels were also the Golden League Champions for three consecutive years. She was a member of the California Elite Soccer Club where she collected many accolades, including team captain during the 2017 season and the Hardest Worker award two years in a row. The team was also the national champions during the 2016 season.

Rylee Covington – MF – Snow Hill High School – Pocomoke, Md.

Covington was a key contributor on the varsity team for four years at Snow Hill High School. She was a First-Team All Bayside honoree and was the leading scorer in the conference for two consecutive years. In her four years of play at Snow Hill, she recorded 66 goals and 35 assists.

She was also very successful in the classroom, being a member of the National Honor Society and the National Tech Honor Society.

Kailee Erwin – MF – Indian Land High School- Indian Land

Erwin was a four-year starter on the girl’s soccer team for Indian Land High School. She was a member of the 2017 SCHSC State Championship team. In the championship game, Erwin assisted in a goal that would take the game into double OT. She also connected on one of the five penalty kicks to win the PK shootout. Erwin accumulated many accolades throughout the 2017 season including the Coaches’ Award, 3A All-Region team, and 3A SHSSCA All-State team. During the 2015 season, Erwin made the 2A All-Region team as a freshman. With the Discoveries Soccer Club out of Rock Hill, Erwin was a starter and a team captain during the 2017 season. The team was also the runner-ups for the State Cup in 2017.

Ellie Finneran – CB – Indian Hills Community College – Essex, England

The England native was a key member of the Indian Hill Junior College women’s soccer team. She was the 2017 team captain and a First-team all conference honoree. She started in 16 games for the team and helped them finish the season with a 12-2-3 record. Finneran was chosen for the All-Tournament team for two consecutive years. She was a member of the back-to-back ESFA National Championship team.

Sarah Grayson – D – South Effingham High School – Guyton, Ga.

Grayson was a four year letterman for the South Effingham High School girls soccer team.. She made the Region 3AAAAA All-Region honorable mention team two consecutive seasons. During the 2016-17 season she was selected to play in the 2017 Specialty Sports All-Star games. Grayson was also the winner of the Coaches’ Award and the Region Defensive Player of the Year.

Delaney Hood – GK – Ashley Ridge High School – Summerville

The goalkeeper from Ashley Ridge High School, she was in goal for the team for many years. She was an All Region 7-AAAAA selection. With her club team, Summerville Soccer Club, they were the winners of the 2017 State Championship. Aside from soccer, Hood has been on the honor roll for all four years.

Monica Jimenez – MF – Independence High School- Bakersfield, Calif.

Jimenez was a four year starter on the varsity team at Independence High School. She held the captain position for three year. She was the recipient of the 2015 Coaches Award and the 2017 winner of the Jockey Club Award. Jimenez helped her team end the season with a 15-3-1 record. Off the field, she was awarded the 2016 Academic Achievement Award.

Salley Slice – F — Chapin High School – Chapin

Slice racked up on honors and awards while at Chapin High School. Slice made the SCHSSCA 3A Region 4 All-Region team two consecutive years. She was a member of the SCUFC Premier Elite II Attitude/Effort Team Award. The 2017 season was probably her most successful, loading up on post season honors. Slice was the S.C. Coaches Association of Women’s Sports 4A Soccer Player of the Year. Along with that, she was the S.C. Sports Report 4A All-State Team and Lexington County ledger All-Midlands team. Slice was apart of the SCHSSCA All-State Team.

Briley Stokes – MF – West Florence High School – Florence

Stokes comes to Newberry after a successful career on the West Florence High School girls soccer team. She was the captain for the team for two years straight. Stokes was an All-Region honoree on three different occasions. With the help of Stokes, West Florence made it to the first round of the 2017 Class AAAAA Girls Soccer tournament.
