ROCK HILL — Newberry sophomore Charlie Cook led the Wolves to a seventh place finish in the Winthrop/adidas Invitational’s Garnet Division at the Winthrop Farm on Saturday. Newberry’s women’s squad finished in 10th place.

Men’s Race

Cook completed the 8-kilometer course in 29:04.7, which was good for 48th overall and 21st in the Garnet (non-Division I) division of the race.

Robert Stafford completed the race in 30:58.3 (75th overall, 36th Garnet), while Seth Howe was just behind him at 31:08.9 (78th overall, 39th Garnet). Peter Hackett ran the course in 31:22.8 (80thoverall, 40th Garnet) and Taylor Dennard rounded out Newberry’s team scorers with a 32:39.1 (91stoverall, 47th Garnet).

The Wolves finished in seventh of 11 teams in the Garnet division with 183 points, while Queens won the men’s event.

Women’s Race

Newberry scored 222 points in the women’s event, finishing 10th of 11 teams in the Garnet division.

Danielle Cruz was the Wolves’ top finisher, running the 5-kilometer course in 21:56.5 to finish 80th overall and 27th in the Garnet division.

Michelle Ling completed the race in 23:20.0 (98th overall, 39th Garnet) and Diana Terrell ran the course in 24:34.6 (111th overall, 50th Garnet.). Hayden Francis was just behind her at 24:51.1 (113th overall, 52nd Garnet) and Makaylyn Higgins rounded out team scorers at 24:54.5 (115th overall, 54th Garnet).

The Wolves are next in action in two weeks’ time, as Newberry will run in the USC Upstate Invitational on Oct. 3 in Spartanburg.
