Lander slips past Wolves 5-4

GREENWOOD — The Newberry women’s tennis team fell to Lander in a tight 5-4 contest on Thursday.

The Wolves took the early advantage in doubles action as No. 1 Lucia Davila and Elisa Aguirre began the match with an 8-5 win. No. 2 Amanda Carrillo and Rebeca Martinez followed it up with an 8-4 victory to put Newberry up 2-0. Lander would take the last point as No. 3 Korina Martinez and Tricia Davie fell 8-1.

In singles competition, No. 1 Carrillo defeated her counterpart 6-3, 6-3 while No. 2 Aguirre won in straight sets 6-0, 6-2 to give Newberry the 4-1 lead.

Lander would retaliate with four consecutive decisions against No. 3 Davila (2-6, 1-6), No. 4 Martinez (0-6, 5-7), No. 5 Davie (0-6, 0-6) and No. 6 Morgan Powers (0-6, 0-6) to win 5-4.

The Wolves fell to Lander Thursday afternoon 5-4.
