PHILADELPHIA — Former Newberry men’s soccer defender Paul Marie was selected 12th overall in the 2018 Major League Soccer SuperDraft by the San Jose Earthquakes.

Marie, who transferred to Division I Florida International after spending the 2014 season with Newberry, was an all-South Atlantic Conference honorable mention selection following his only season in scarlet and gray. The Saint-Aubin-des-Bois, France native scored four goals and notched an assist from his outside back position.

Marie blossomed into one of the nation’s top collegiate players during his three seasons at Florida International. As a senior in 2017, Marie was named a Third Team All-American in addition to picking up first team all-region and all-conference honors. Marie scored 18 goals and tallied 15 assists during his four collegiate seasons between Newberry and FIU.

“It wasn’t easy,” Marie said from the podium moments after his selection. “I started in D2 here in the U.S. and made my way all the way up. Now I’m here. It’s a beautiful day. Thank you to my coach at FIU. Thank you to my coaches at Newberry. Thank you to my former coach in France. I can’t wait to get started.”
