NORTH — The Whitmire High School Wolverines delivered a crushing defeat to the North High School Eagles on Friday night with a commanding 40-0 win on the road.

“I told the guys to savor the moments, but Monday it’s back to work. I think next week’s opponent, Wagener-Salley, will be our toughest game yet,” said Head Coach Charlie Jenkins.

The Wolverines got the first score of the night on a six-yard touchdown pass from Austin Jenkins to Logan McMellon. Cole Eison successfully made the point after the touchdown.

The Wolverines scored again in the first quarter on a four yard pass from Jenkins to Alex Ellison. The PAT by Eison was again successful. The Wolverines closed out the first quarter with Jenkins hitting Ellison again for a nine yard touchdown with 24 seconds left in the first quarter. Eison made another successful PAT.

The Wolverines led 21-0 at the end of the first quarter.

The only score of the second quarter was a one-yard run by Austin Jenkins. The PAT was no good, but the score still stood in the Wolverines favor at 27-0.

During the third quarter Devin Vo added a six yard run, but the conversion was unsuccessful. The final score of the night came at the beginning of the fourth quarter when A.J. Renwick made a six-yard run making the final score of 40-0.

It was also during the fourth quarter when the highlight play of the night took place.

“Backup 10th grade cornerback Lomas Davis intercepted a pass in the fourth quarter and our sideline erupted,” Charlie Jenkins said. “I cannot tell you how good it makes me feel when our starters celebrate for the backups like they do. To me that is the essence of what we are trying to build in our program.”

During Friday’s game offense tried to mix up the run and the pass and Jenkins said that will help the team as they progress through the season. However, he said that the night’s success came from experience.

“We are not getting pushed around and I do not think we have had a cramp in three games so far. And we have a lot of players who are on the field for most of the game,” he said.

During the game the defense made sure to keep the Eagles back. Jenkins said this was thanks to a good game plan by the defensive staff.

“Coaches Andrew Campbell, Jarrod King and Dez Harp do a good job of taking away the other team’s favorite plays each week,” he said.

With the third win of the season under the team’s belt, Jenkins said they still have areas they can improve.

“Definitely room for improvement in every facet of the game. Special teams, offense and even defense, if we want to get to where we want to go,” he said.
