ST. CHARLES, Mo. — The Newberry Wolves picked up their first win of the season Sunday, defeating Hendrix 4-2 at Lindenwood’s Hunter Stadium.

Caitlyn Warren had a hat trick in the game and scored the lone goal in the first half for the Wolves in the 32nd match. Newberry headed into the half leading 1-0.

Only a minute and a half ticked off the clock when Caitlyn Warren scored her second goal with a pass from Meghan Smiga. The Wolves had the 2-0 lead for five and a half minutes when Hendrix’s Brooke Whitaker scored on an assist from Morgan Fires.

Two minutes later, Smiga put one past Hendrix goalkeeper Gabryele Pochron for a goal of her own, giving Newberry the 3-1 lead with about 20 minutes left in the game. Caitlyn Warren scored her third goal of game two minutes later stretching the Wolves lead to 4-1. The Wolves scored all four goals within a 20 minute period of the game. Hendrix tried to put on a late run with another goal of its own by Fires at the 56-minute mark but the Wolves held on for the two-goal win.

The Wolves as a team had 30 shots with 24 on goal and 11 penalty corners. Dakota Elzy picked up her first win of the year as goalkeeper with four saves on the afternoon. Hendrix as a team had eight shots with six on net. Pochron got the loss for the Warriors as she gave up four goals and had 20 saves.

The Wolves return home and host Limestone this Friday, September 18, at 7 p.m.
