NEWBERRY — Newberry High School’s bid for a fifth straight home seasonal opener victory fell short Friday evening in their 35-13 loss to Chapin.

Going to the air only two times in their 12-play drive, Newberry’s Yafari Werts scored his 32nd career touchdown with a one-yard run. Ethan Day’s PAT was good with just over seven minutes left in the first quarter.

After a three-and-out by Newberry, Chapin marched 63 yards in 11 plays with quarterback Logan Bailey scoring on a fourth down from 16 yards out with 2:30 left in the opening stanza.

After another three-and-out by Newberry, Chapin only needed 25 seconds as the Eagles scored on the last play of the first quarter with a 61-yard touchdown pass.

Newberry’s final touchdown of the evening came with 8:45 left before the half when Amir Abrams scored from 23 yards out on a third down. Day’s PAT was blocked.

A scary moment occurred in the third quarter when Newberry’s Zy Towns had to be carted off the field with a neck injury. Early reports are Towns’ injury could have been much worse but all safety precautions were taken just in case.

Newberry will travel on Friday to Broome for their final non-region game of the season.
