ANDERSON — The Newberry College women’s soccer team had a tough mid-week test Wednesday afternoon against the Trojans of Anderson, where they dropped 1-0 in overtime.

Newberry (2-8, 1-5 SAC) would get the ball rolling in the first half with Alyssa Ortega and Jacqueline Aldrete taking the first two shots.

Ortega, who leads the conference in goals (6) faced off against Anderson’s’ goalkeeper Abby Helm. Helm ranks second in the conference in saves.

Anderson (3-5-1, 2-3 SAC) came into OT with a mass of aggression on the offensive side, launching off three shots in the opening minutes. In the 96th minute of the contest, the Trojans Melanie Maddox secured the win for the team via a corner.

At the end of regulation, Newberry took 12 shots with seven of them being on frame. Rachelle Serrano took the Wolves lone shot in the last 29 minutes of regulation.

Newberry was out shot by the Trojans 5-9 in the second half.

Jaylee Gant kept the game at zero in regulation with 10 saves to keep Newberry alive. On three different shots, Gant’s quick reaction saved Anderson’s attempt to seal Newberry’s fate. Ortega led the way for the Wolves shooting all four of her shots on goal. Morgan Powers added two of her three shots on goal.

Newberry takes on the Railsplitters of Lincoln Memorial on Oct. 7. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
