WHITMIRE — The Whitmire High School Wolverines are now 1-0 in Region play after defeating the Ware Shoals High School Fighting Hornets on Friday 26-20.
Head Coach Charlie Jenkins said Friday’s game was a nice setting for Class A high school football.
“It was Youth Night. We recognized our rec league teams and cheerleaders and our middle school players and cheerleaders. It was perfect weather. We had a really big crowd. Ware Shoals brought a large crowd and their band, and we got the win to go 1-0 in the Region,” he said. “We took a 26-8 lead with about nine minutes to go in the game. I was thinking of what substitutions I should make to make sure everyone got into the game. All of our guys work hard at practice so I was hoping to reward them. Then all of a sudden Ware Shoals scored quickly and we had a game again. We have to do a better job of finishing the game.”
The game started off a bit slow Friday. Neither team seemed able to get past their opponents defense. Then, when it almost looked like the first quarter would end 0-0 the Wolverines scored a touchdown with a little over a minute to go. With a four yard run by Quentin Aughtry the Wolverines were on the board. While the PAT was no good, the Wolverines ended the first quarter in the lead 6-0.
However, the Fighting Hornets took the lead with 10 minutes to go in the second quarter with a touchdown and a successful PAT. Neither team was able to score again in the first half and the score was 8-6 in the Fighting Hornets favor.
The Wolverines returned to the third quarter with a new determination. With a little over eight minutes on the clock Bailey Holloman made a one yard touchdown, and the Wolverines retook the lead 12-8. The PAT was once again no good.
A few minutes later when the Wolverines again had control of the ball. Jaylen Brown made a seven yard touchdown run and the Wolverines has a comfortable 18-8 lead. The PAT was unsuccessful.
The Wolverines got their last touchdown of the night in the fourth quarter when Chandler Crumley made the score with a 12 yard run. Holloman then ran a successful two point conversion. The score was 24-8.
The Fighting Hornets scored twice more, but the Wolverines prevented any PAT and the game ended 26-20.
“Our defense played well all night. Coach Campbell, Coach Lockwood, and Coach McCarley had them ready on defense. We shut them down all night except for three busts on defense where we let their best receiver get behind us on pass plays,” Jenkins said.
Offensively Jenkins said they did just enough to keep the ball away from the Fighting Hornets.
“We can look real good on offense when we get in a rhythm, but we still put ourselves in long yard situations too often with penalties and mental mistakes. We will have to clear that up if we want to have a real shot at winning the Region,” he said. “We will use this week to rest and nurse some injuries, but we will use the weight room and we will step up our conditioning. Last year the off week took our edge off. We aren’t going to let that happen this year.”
The Wolverines are off this week, but will return to the field next week when they take on Calhoun Falls.
