NEWBERRY — The Newberry Academy Eagles are gearing up to play their second game of the season against the Wardlaw Academy Patriots. The Eagles are currently 0-1 and the Patriots are 3-0.

The Eagles were unable to play the Patriots last year due to the game being cancelled, but the Patriots did defeat the Eagles two years ago. To defeat them this year, Head Coach Benji Sease said they will have to run their offense efficiently and not turn the ball over.

Practice for the Eagles has been to work out some of the issues that were presented during last week’s game.

“Correcting missed assignments from our first game, working on keeping our pad level lower and not turning the ball over,” Sease said. “We are playing a mighty fine team. We cannot beat ourselves and we cannot turn the ball over.”

The Patriots can beat their opposing team with their speed, according to Sease, but they can also use power.

“They prefer to play power football. We have to play with our pad level lower and be able to find the football on defense,” he said.

This week the Eagles will be dealing with an injured player. Johnny Riggs, offensive line/defensive line, is out with a hamstring injury. While Sease said his injury will hurt the team, they have tried to work on some different things this week to mitigate his loss.

The Eagles will travel to Johnston tonight to play their second away game. Kick off is at 7:30 p.m.
