ORANGEBURG — The Chapin/Newberry American Legion team traveled to Orangeburg on June 3 and brought home a win against undefeated Post 4.

Kevis Burton (NH) got the nod for Chapin/Newberry. The lefty pitched five and two thirds innings. He faced 23 batters, struck out six, issued four walks, gave up two hits and no runs. Trey Huber (MC) came in as relief to finish the sixth inning. Zach Zeising (DF), Patrick Yoder (NH) and Tristan Smaltz (CH) pitched an inning each to finish the game.

Orangeburg was held to one run on three hits for the night.

Chapin/Newberry wasted no time and scored one run in the top of the first inning. Peyton Spangler (CH) singled up the middle and Justin Hawkins (MC/USCS) drove the ball to the centerfield fence for a double scoring Spanglar. After a scoreless second inning, Delshun Young (CH) lead off the third with a bunt single, but was tagged out stealing second.

Danton Hyman (MC) singled, Hawkins walked and Ryan Stoudemire hit a shot to the right field corner for a triple scoring Hyman and Hawkins.

With the score 3 to 0, Chapin/Newberry added three more runs in the fifth. Lead-off batter Corey Stone (MC) doubled, Young singled. Hyman laid down a sac bunt to move the runners to third and second. Spangler singled scoring Stone and Young. Hawkins, Blake Smith (DF) and Landon Allison (CH/SMC) walked scoring Spangler and making the score 6 to 0.

Orangeburg changed pitchers the bottom of the fifth inning and shut down the scoring for the remainder of the game.

Hitters were Young 2-4; Spangler 2-5; Hyman 1-3; Hawkins 1-3; Stoudemire 1-5; Smith 1-4; and Stone 1-4.

On June 5, Chapin/Newberry hosted Orangeburg at Smith Road Complex.

Ryan Stoudemire was on the bump for Chapin/Newberry. He pitched four innings, faced 18 batters, struck out seven, issued two walks, gave up four hits and two runs. He was relieved in the fifth by Zack Ziesing who pitched two innings and Corey Stone who pitched one inning.

The bats came alive for Chapin/Newberry scoring 13 runs on 14 hits.

Stoudemire started the hit parade the bottom of the second when he laced a single down the first base line. Landon Allison lined a double to the fence in the left center field gap. Duncan Crotwell scored Stoudemire with a fielder’s choice. Crotwell had his running shoes on and reached home on Zach Ziesing’s double making the score 2-0.

The hits continued in the third as lead-off batter Hyman singled and Hawkins fired a shot over the left centerfield fence to go yard and scored two more runs. Stoudemire followed with a double, Allison walked, Crotwell singled and Ziesing walked scoring Stoudemire.

Triston Smaltz started the fourth off with a walk, Hyman singled and Hawkins hit fly ball to the center field fence for a double scoring two runs. Stoudemire, Crotwell, Ziesing, Haney and Smaltz singled. The score the bottom of the fourth was 11-2.

Two more runs were added in the bottom of the fifth making the score 13-2. Chapin/Newberry won in seven innings .

Hits for the game were Hyman 2-5; Hawkins 2-4 (homer, 2b); Stoudemire 2-3 (2b); Allison 1-3 (2b); Crotwell 2-3; Ziesing 3-3 (2b); Haney l-4; Smaltz 1-3.

Chapin/Newberry took over first place in Region 8 with a record of 5-0. They play at 7 p.m. June 9 in Lexington County’s new Blowfish Stadium.
