Lange named SAC Freshman of the Year

NEWBERRY — Newberry College freshman men’s basketball player Marshall Lange has been named South Atlantic Conference Freshman of the Year.

Lange becomes Newberry’s third SAC freshman of the year in the school’s 19 years in the league. Lange, who was selected to the five-member All-Freshman Team, averaged 12.8 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game this season. He scored 20 points three times, including a career-high 26 points against Mars Hill on Feb. 4.

The freshman from High Point, N.C., swiped 32 steals this season, which ranks 16th in the SAC. Lange finished with a 46.6 field goal percentage, including 40.4 percent from three-point range.

Lange led Newberry in scoring in four contests, starting off his Newberry career by leading the team against Erskine in the season opener with 21 points. Lange saw action in 28 games, while drawing a starting nod in 10 and averaged nearly 21 minutes per contest.

Gerald Evans was named a statistical champion after leading the SAC with 2.57 steals per game. Newberry also led the league as a team in scoring offense (94.0) and steals (367).

Newberry finished its season 18-11 overall, securing four-straight seasons with at least 18 wins. The Wolves qualified for the SAC Tournament, clinching the fifth seed with a 12-9 league record.
