Newberry Academy shines at region tournament

NEWBERRY — Newberry Academy hosted the SCISA Region 2 Tournament on Friday night and Saturday.

The Academy teams performed well, with two middle school championships and several players being named to middle school and varsity all-region teams.

On Friday night, the Lady Eagles varsity team faced number one seed Laurens Academy. The Lady Eagles lost 32-21 despite playing well.

The varsity boys faced Anderson Christian, and also came up short in their semi-final match-up, losing 72-52.

The Eagles held their own against the number one seed. With 4:22 left in the first half, the game was tied 19-19. Anderson went on a 20-4 run to close out the half, and the Eagles never recovered.

Darius Williams finished the night with a rare triple-double, tallying 17 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists.

Saturday was the time for the middle school teams to shine in their respective championship games.

The younger Lady Eagles culminated their season with a 35-24 win over Cambridge Academy in their final. The Lady Eagles were paced by Kailey Cheeks with 13 points and Daja Taylor with 12 points.

The win also put an exclamation point on a perfect 19-0 season.

The middle school boys faced W. Wyman King Academy in their final, and won in a defensive struggle 15-9. The games marked the end of the season for the middle school teams.

The varsity teams will wait until later in the week to see if they are extended an invitation to the SCISA State Tournament.

Several players received individual accolades for Newberry Academy.

For the middle school Lady Eagles, both Cheeks and Taylor were honored with All-Tournament recognition.

For the middle school boys, Anthony McClean and Julio Ramirez were name to the All-Tournament team.

For the varsity girls, Leigha Harbert was named to the All-Tournament team and Amber Suber was named to the All-Region team.

For the varsity boys, Tyrese Taylor was named to the All-Tournament team and Williams was named to the All-Region team.
