NEWBERRY — Newberry (5-10-2, 2-7-2) fell to Lenoir-Rhyne (11-4-2, 7-3-1) by a final of 3-1 on Saturday afternoon.

Due to a deflection off a Bears corner kick, an own goal was credited to Newberry in the seventh minute to give Lenoir-Rhyne an early lead.

Goals by Marc Fernandez and Ismael Noumansana in the 22nd and 28th minutes gave Lenoir-Rhyne a 3-0 lead, however, those are the only goals that Newberry would allow the rest of the way.

Claus Lehland pulled the Wolves’ closer just before half notching his fourth goal of the season. A ball that bounced around in the box found the foot of Lehland, as the shot could not be thwarted by Bears.

After an earlier yellow card against Ismael Noumansana, Newberry gained a late advantage as Noumansana was awarded a second yellow and dismissed from the match. Newberry controlled the ball the rest of the way, but could not inch closer.

Newberry was outshot 11-8 in the match. The Bears put seven of their shots on frame to the Wolves two.

Lehland led the way for Newberry recording three shots on the pitch. Cameron Provan added two shots of his own.

Brad Dixon had four saves for the Wolves. Dixon ended the 2016 season with 103 saves. Conner Goulet and Keegan Petersen also appeared in goal for Newberry, as the team celebrated its Senior Day.

Newberry has a young core that will look to improve under first year head coach Bryce Cooper. The Wolves recorded finished with a conference record of 2-7-2, which is a two-win improvement over last year’s team.
