In response to the July 10, 2019, article in The Newberry Observer concerning a proposed sale of the golf course, I would like to offer my two cents in support of the golf course.

The Whitmire Golf Course has been here in Whitmire for over 80 years. There are a lot of towns around that would love to have a course like ours. We have a lot of youth that play there as well as a lot of seniors. There are a lot of families here that has someone that plays out there. People that don’t play or understand the game don’t get it. Playing golf builds character and lasting friendships. People from neighboring cities come here to play golf. They spend money here at the restaurants, gas stations and the grocery store.

All of us love to see young people playing golf as there’s not a lot for them to do here. I like seeing them on the course instead of a lot of other things they could get into! I have seen a number of young people start the game and play all their life. I have talked to some of the out of town golfers who say they wouldn’t have any reason to come back to Whitmire if we didn’t have the golf course.

If the Town Council (Whitmire) wants to waste three or four thousand dollars on testing, they should put the money instead on water lines. I feel our community golf course is important to young and old for sport and entertainment.

Sincerely,

Billy E. Lollis
