Mayor Foster Senn of the City of Newberry has hosted a Junior Leadership class for five years for students at Newberry High School, Newberry Academy, and homeschoolers. This year, Alana West with Clemson Extension and the Chamber collaborated with the city to expand the program to the county so that juniors and seniors from Mid-Carolina and Whitmire were added to the program.

The first date hosted by the Newberry Firehouse Conference Center where the students received an overview of the Junior Leadership program, participated in ice-breakers to get to know one another, and were engaged in a Leadership workshop led by Charles Weathers of the Weathers Group.

The second day of Junior Leadership focused on higher education. The class met at Newberry College, ate in the cafeteria, and toured the campus where they were able to talk with the student ambassadors about college life. They then participated in a team activity that enhanced the importance of teamwork and leadership. They heard from the admissions department about the necessary steps in preparation for college and the things that college admissions look for in potential students.

The fourth Leadership Newberry County class focused on Law Enforcement and Emergency Services. The Newberry Observer Editor Andrew Wigger covered the day in detail in last Saturday’s newspaper, so be sure to check that out. if you haven’t already.
