The Newberry County YMCA is an essential, charitable organization dedicated to strengthening our community through programs that nurture the potential of children, promote individual health and well-being, strengthen families and give back to provide support for our neighbors.

The Newberry County Family YMCA is governed by a Board of Directors that is charged with the responsibility to further the mission of the YMCA through effective planning, ensuring adequate financial resources, protecting assets and providing financial oversight, while supporting the chief executive officer and his staff to deliver positive, value added and efficient programs and facilities to its membership.

The YMCA board is comprised of approximately 18 members from across the county who are all active members of the YMCA and who have a vested interest in helping the Y achieve its mission and goals within Newberry County while also serving as an economic driver for the community. At the Y, strengthening all of Newberry County is our cause. Every day we work side-by-side with our neighbors to make sure that everyone, regardless of age, income or background, has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive.

The Board Development Committee of the YMCA is responsible for enhancing the Board’s performance. Each year this Committee convenes as needed to review Board composition, Board openings as well as to conduct a Board evaluation process. This committee is always seeking qualified prospective Board members from within our own membership. The Board Development Committee maintains an active list of prospective and existing board members. As openings occur, the Committee will evaluate the needs of our Board and proceed with the process of vetting all prospective board directors before their nomination.

Board members agree to regular participation in meetings, to support the Newberry County Family YMCA by work, wisdom, or gifts to include annual giving. Each board member agrees to participation in at least one Board Committee, to maintain his/her local YMCA membership in good standing, to follow the leadership hierarchy and direct day-to-day issues to the CEO. Board members represent the NCF YMCA in the local community and at State, regional or national YMCA meetings when called upon.

If you are interested in becoming a board member of our YMCA or would like to recommend a strong candidate, please contact Board Development Committee Chairperson, Jimmie Coggins or Tamra Tootle, Board Chair at 803-276-9936.

The board and staff hope to rally the support of the community with its Annual Campaign which launched on March 19th . This is a time when community members, businesses, foundations, YMCA volunteers and staff come together and give generously to help guarantee that everyone can benefit from life-changing Y experiences. Contributions received from our annual campaign efforts allow us to provide the growing opportunity to individuals and families in need to receive vital Y programs and services. According to Jason Boice, Fund Raising Committee Chair, “We hope that the community will help us exceed this year’s campaign goal of $50,000.00.” No contribution is too small and all contributions are tax deductible. The board sees 2018 as an exciting year for the YMCA.
