A new Rotary year is in full swing and we have some exciting news to share.

Look for the Rotary Beer Garden during this year’s Oktoberfest. The beer garden will be located in Memorial Park with convenient seating and authentic German beer.

Funds raised by this year’s beer garden will be used to expand the picnic shelter in Pride Park for the Newberry County Disabilities and Special Needs Board.

Also on display at Oktoberfest will be the Rotary golf cart which is being raffled to support Boy Scout Troop 1. Your $20 ticket can be purchased from a Rotary member or a Boy Scout at Oktoberfest or at various Newberry locations and events this fall.

The winner will be announced at a drawing on Dec. 1. The Rotary Club of Newberry has supported Boy Scout Troop 1 since 1921. In the last three years, we have been working with the scout troop to renovate and move into a building on Speers Street.

The move is complete and now the goal is to continue to maintain the facility and to support the scouts in various activities throughout the year.

Renee Stubbs, 2015-2016 club president, extended a challenge to the club to reach 100 members by our 100th anniversary in 2020.

Kimberly Kitchens, 2017-2018 club president, is continuing the initiative and last month we welcomed Lee Anne Kitchen, Walt McLeod and Lori Branham to our ranks. We are now a club of 78.

We look forward to including the whole group in our mission of supporting the Newberry community and living up to the Rotary motto of “Service Above Self.”

If you are interested in learning more about Rotary, join us at the Community Hall on Main Street at 1 p.m. on Sept. 22 or Oct. 13.
