Newberry Police Log

The Newberry Police Department reported the following incidents:

• Travis Kenard Long, 25, of 540 Wren Road, Newberry, was charged with narcotic violations and bringing contraband into a jail on Nov. 29. While at a traffic safety checkpoint officers noticed a strong smell of marijuana coming from inside Long’s vehicle. During a search, officers found a Hydrocodone pill on Long. Two bags of marijuana were found in his back pocket during a search at the jail.

• Jaymaris Tydell Jones, 20, of 1239 Kinard St., Newberry, was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia on Nov. 27. An officer on patrol saw a Nissan Maxima fail to stop at a stop sign and saw that the driver was not wearing a seat belt. After initiating a stop the officer noticed the strong smell of marijuana coming from the vehicle. K-9 Officer Percy alerted on the vehicle’s center console where a scale covered in marijuana residue was found. Jones was issued a ticket and released.

• Kendrick Lamar Nance, 24, of 2421 Johnstone St., Newberry, was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and the unlawful carry of a firearm on Nov. 28. At a traffic stop an officer noticed the smell of marijuana coming from Nance’s vehicle. A digital scale covered in marijuana residue and two handguns were found during a search of the vehicle.

• Kenneth Bernard Bates Jr., 23, of 2015 Inez Chaplin Road, Newberry, was charged with simple possession of marijuana on Nov. 29. While performing a licence check, an officer noticed an SUV make an abrupt left turn without using its signal. The officer initiated a traffic stop and Bates gave the officer verbal consent to search his vehicle during which a vitamin bottle containing a bag of marijuana was discovered. Bates was issued a ticket and released from the scene.

• Yvonne Margaret Fischer, 45, of 125 Beacon Lane, Newberry was charged with shoplifting on Nov. 25 after Wal-mart loss prevention staff saw Fischer attempt to conceal merchandise in her purse. She was asked to follow them to the security office to discuss the matter but she refused, handed over a few items and drove away. Fischer was identified from surveillance video and was arrested at her home.

• Kevis Devon Price, 26, of 16 Kookie Lane, Newberry, was charged with narcotic violations on Nov. 25. An officer on patrol recognized Price driving a vehicle and knew that Price’s licence was currently under suspension. After making a traffic stop and running Price’s information the officer arrested him. After noticing the smell of marijuana the officer conducted a search of the vehicle and located a Gerber baby food can containing marijuana as well as three counterfeit $20 bills.

• Jason Lee Hightower, 44, of 1617 First St., Newberry, was charged with DUI on Nov. 26. An officer on patrol noticed that Hightower’s tag lights were out and initiated a traffic stop. The officer asked if Hightower had had anything to drink and he stated that he had had a couple and then agreed to participate in a sobriety test. During the tests the officer observed that Hightower was unable to maintain balance and continually swayed.

• Devin Tobias Holloway, 33, of 334 Pinehurst Drive, Greenwood, was charged with DUI on Nov. 28. An officer saw a Mustang swerve numerous times on I-26. After exiting the interstate, the vehicle failed to stop at a stop sign and also did not use its turn signal while making a left turn. The vehicle was pulled over and a city officer arrived on the scene. The officer noticed the strong smell of alcohol coming from the vehicle when he approached Holloway. The officer asked Holloway if he would consent to a few roadside sobriety tests and he agreed. After failing several tests Holloway was placed under arrest.
