PROSPERITY — Town Administrator Karen Livingston reported the Prosperity Police Department has received a grant of $19,000 to buy body cameras from the S.C. Department of Public Safety.

“It is a cash award so when we sign the acceptance of it we can move forward,” Livingston said. The purchase includes maintenance and storage.

In his economic development report, Councilman Mike Hawkins reported resident Dave Rowe has opened a new business, Spalding Repair Shop.

“He’s only going to be open three days a week. His present employer is going to allow him to continue to work three days which sounds like a great opportunity to phase in a new business,” Hawkins said.

In an attempt to “get a head start” on this year’s Christmas parade, Councilman Allen Gallman said the planning committee was expected to hold its first meeting on Thursday.

“We’ve got a good group of volunteers. Some of them are from last year and we have a couple of new ones,” Livingston said.

Utilities director Ed West reported that he and his crew have worked the past 19 days straight in an attempt to update the water main along Armfield Street.

“This is a project that has been needed for a long time,” West said. “It’s gone well for the most part. The heat’s been rough on everybody.”

West said utilities customers in the area have been “great” and very understanding and the finished project will result in increased water pressure and volume.

Additionally, West is overseeing a long term project to update electric lines and poles along Dewalt Street which should be completed in the next two months.

“We should have minimum to almost no outages for customers,” West said. “We’ll just do it on a case-by-case (basis). We’ll have time to plan it and work with each individual so we can finish that out and upgrade that street.”

Mayor Derek Underwood commented that West was “really working himself up to that vacation,” to which he responded, “Just a day off would be great.”

Livingston also reported the hire of a new administrative assistant following an interview process of four candidates.
