NEWBERRY COUNTY — Newberry County Sheriff Lee Foster has been named to a national forum designed to study the issues facing local detention centers and correctional facilities.

Foster was selected as part of a nationwide law enforcement panel made up of experts in various disciplines related to local detention center issues. Foster was selected for his extensive work and his experience with Small, Rural, Tribal, and Border Enforcement agencies.

The group was formed by the Bureau of Justice Statistics to study issues such as lack of mental health resources available to local detention center and a variety of other issue unique to local detention centers.

“This is a great honor for me,” said Foster. “But the citizens of Newberry County can take pride and confidence in knowing that Newberry County’s voice is being heard on the national level because of the training and expertise we have gained in service to this county. In addition to expressing my views as it pertained to rural law enforcement, I got to bring home a lot of knowledge shared with other agencies.”
