NEWBERRY — Newberry County Council has proclaimed July 26, 2026, as Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) 36th Anniversary Day in Newberry County, recognizing the civil rights law that has expanded opportunities and protected the rights of individuals with disabilities for more than three decades.
Signed into law on July 26, 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in employment, education, government services, public accommodations, commercial facilities, and other areas of public life. The legislation has helped reduce barriers, promote accessibility, and create greater opportunities for individuals with disabilities to fully participate in their communities.
The proclamation also recognizes the work of Able South Carolina, advocates, and community partners throughout Newberry County and across South Carolina who continue to advance the principles of accessibility, inclusion, and equal opportunity.
Chairman Robert Shealy presented the proclamation to Mary Alex Kopp, Vice President & Chief Public Relations Officer for Able South Carolina, on July 10.
