UPDATE: The subject has been taken into custody after the hostage situation on Evans Street. The City of Newberry reports that Evans Street from Wilson to Pondfield Road are still closed to traffic at this time as the scene is cleared.

NEWBERRY — Newberry County Sheriff Lee Foster has reported a hostage situation at Vocational Rehabilitation, on Evans Street.

Foster confirmed there is one suspect inside, and one hostage. He has also confirmed that shots have been fired, but they do not believe anyone has been injured.

Evans Street from Wilson to Pondfield Roads are closed at this time. He advises no one go in that area.

A representative from the Newberry County Memorial Hospital has also confirmed the hospital is on lockdown.

Both the City of Newberry Police Department and the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office are on the scene.
