PROSPERITY — Prosperity Town Council was recently recognized by the Municipal Association of South Carolina for group completion of the Municipal Elected Officials Institute of Government.
“The Municipal Association, back in the mid-80’s, established a training institute that we call the Municipal Elected Officials Institute of Government. It is a training program for mayors and Council Members — the first graduating class was in 1988 so we’re over 30 years into graduating mayors and Council Members,” said Jeff Shacker, field services manager with the Municipal Association of South Carolina.
The program consists of five courses (two are offered today). Shacker said these are provided on demand, or on the Municipal Association website — with mayor and Council Members able to take the courses from the comfort of their own homes.
“We go over such things as municipal economic development, FOIA, human resources, etc. — just about every topic,” Shacker said. “We also have two all-day sessions that we offer in February and once you attend those two all-day sessions and you complete the five courses you can graduate the program.”
Shacker added that the recognition is special since not many municipalities have all five Council Members complete the program.
“What’s unique about Prosperity is that all five Council Members have graduated that institute making them one of 18 municipalities (including Newberry) in the state that can claim that and we’ve got 271 so y’all are in more than the Top 10 percent,” he said.

• Ed West reported the Utilities Department is continuing to put fencing up (damaged by the storm) — he said they are waiting on final materials to finish the job. West added they are also working on changing poles which sustained damage during the recent storm and construction in front of some residences in town.
