NEWBERRY — The Newberry County Sheriff’s Office has officially charged Dean Ryan Daugherty, 46, of 96 Golf View Road, Newberry, with domestic violence high and aggravated nature, kidnapping, two counts of pointing and presenting a firearm, discharging a weapon under the influence of alcohol and possession of weapon during a violent crime.

Officers responded on Sunday to Golf View Road to shots being fired, this occurred around 7:30 p.m. The NCSO reports that when officers arrived, they were told that shots fired were part of a domestic dispute and that a male suspect — later identified as Daugherty — had the weapon and a woman was still in the home. The Newberry Police Department and State Law Enforcement Division also responded.

When deputies arrived on the scene Daugherty came to the door with the pistol in his hand and pointed the weapon at the first two officers who arrived on the scene from the doorway of the home, according to the Sheriff’s Office. After the suspect retreated back into the residence, the deputies heard what they believed to be a gunshot from the rear of the home — according to NCSO.

“They responded to what is probably the most dangerous call law enforcement can go on — domestic dispute with a weapon. They still had to respond and they still had to check on it, they approached the house and approached it with caution, and the guy in the house made a choice — pointed the gun at them and later fired his weapon,” said Sheriff Lee Foster. “We cannot say at this time if he shot at them or in the air — we are still investigating that.”

Officers established a perimeter and attempted to call Daugherty from the residence — but he refused to come out, according to the NCSO. They further stated that while they were attempting to have him come out of the residence, that he would appear at windows and doors in the home showing that he had a weapon in his hand — but continued to refuse to come out.

The woman in the house locked herself into a bedroom, where she stayed out of fear of Daugherty — according to the Sheriff’s Office. Just after 9 p.m. on Sunday, the SLED entry team was able to enter the residence and safely remove her from the house without issue. Foster commented that she was unharmed.

About an hour and a half later, at 10:30 p.m., the SLED entry team again made entry into the house and the suspect was taken into custody, according to the NCSO.

“The primary mission is to make sure you end it without anyone getting hurt, through negotiation and through protecting your officers from points of cover. We were able to successfully do that Sunday, unfortunately some of these things don’t turn out that way because the suspect is unwilling to surrender — in this case the guy did surrender without much of a struggle,” Foster said. “Prime example of how dangerous policing in America is, the circumstances around this case in a neighborhood is eerily similar to the case in Florence (where two officers were killed in the line of duty, and several others were wounded) — of course that was our concern was well.”
