NEWBERRY COUNTY — Reuben Elementary third grade students extended their South Carolina History lessons with experiential learning thanks to a spring field trip to Charleston.

Students toured Fort Sumter and the Magnolia Plantation and Gardens.

“This trip really made history come alive for our students,” said Beverly Chapman, RES third grade teacher. “Our students did projects related to the Antebellum time period and extensively studied the Civil War Era as part of our curriculum standards. It was special to see the students’ eyes light up as they saw the historical landmarks firsthand.”

Students gave presentations about the trip, including several who shared PowerPoints with pictures, commentary and video content. Those modes of expression helped students have deeper learning experiences.

This trip was part of the Reuben Elementary School’s real-world applications of its SOAR mantra to “Strive to do your best. Own your actions. Always work together. Respect yourself and others.”

Students and chaperons alike said they learned a great deal from the trip.
