NEWBERRY — Newberry Fire Department responded to 1705 Moon Street, Newberry, Thursday at a 7:18 p.m. in reference to an apartment fire.

Once on scene, Fire Chief Keith Minick said crews found the fire was contained to the kitchen area of the structure and was under control in approximately 15 minutes.

Crews were on scene just under two hours clearing smoke out of the apartment and adjacent apartment. No injuries were reported; however, the apartment had smoke, heat and fire damage, Minick said. The fire was caused by an unattended stove.

There were 14 city firefighters on scene to mitigate the incident along with Newberry Rescue, EMS and law enforcement. Due to the nature of the call, Minick reminds residents to be mindful while cooking.

Minick asks residents to remember to keep a clean area around their stove and to never leave a stove unattended, even for a short period of time. If leaving the room is necessary, he asks to turn the stove off, should you get sidetracked.

“As always, check and maintain your working smoke alarm for your family’s safety,” he said.
