NEWBERRY — Newberry High School student Matthew Nicholson was recently presented the Newberry County Career Center’s highest agriculture honor, the DEKALB Agriculture Accomplishment Award, sponsored by Monsanto Company.
Nicholson, the son of Lee and LeAnn Nicholson, received the award for excellence in academics, leadership and agriculture work experience. Nicholson’s significant experience and accomplishments have included serving as the 2015-2016 Newberry County Career Center FFA Vice President, volunteering over 70 hours representing the FFA at the Newberry Agriculture Expo, attending various FFA events from plant presentation day at the S.C. Statehouse to representing the NCCC FFA on the SC FFA state Tractor Safety and Operation CDE (Career Development Event).
Ashley Priester is Nicholson’s agriculture education instructor at NCCC.
This year the DEKALB Agriculture Accomplishment Award celebrates its 68th anniversary. Over these 68 year more than 168,000 high school seniors from across the country have received the Award, which has become a symbol for excellence and the school’s highest agriculture honor.
As the winner of the 2015 Award, Nicholson’s name will be recorded on a permanent plaque displayed in the agriculture department at the NCCC. Nicholson also received a $250 scholarship from his FFA Chapter. Nicholson plans to major in Diversified Agriculture at Piedmont Technical College in the fall.
