PROSPERITY — Prosperity Town Council discussed what steps should be taken in regards to a dilapidated building in town during Tuesday’s Council Meeting.

The building in question has pieces falling off and these pieces are hitting Leon’s Barber Shop, which sits beside the property. When pulled up on GIS the building is shown to belong to the railroad company, it was then discovered that they do not own the building (due to an error).

Council will look into sending a letter to the railroad company (as the owners on record at the Newberry County Courthouse), this letter will request the dilapidated building to either be repaired or removed.

In other business, Chief Don Evans reported since Jan. 1 to April 16 the Prosperity Police Department has written 240 traffic citations out of 392 stops. He also reported 652 calls for service (911) and 23 arrests so far this year. Out of these 23 arrests, four live in town limits and 10 out of the 23 arrests were drug violations.

Evans informed Council there have been various reports of speeding throughout town and that his officers are out and about tending to the different areas. He added over the next couple of months the officers will continue to take part in training opportunities to stay up-to-date on different scenarios/tactics.
