NEWBERRY — The City of Newberry Police Department have apprehended six subjects after they reportedly took approximately $4,830 worth of merchandise from Walmart on Main Street on July 10.

Destiny Neal, 19, of 2525 Windsor Road, Cayce; Jasmine Holmes, 25, of 4714 James Street, Columbia; Pearlice Livingston, 17, of 2516 Orr Street, Columbia; Marquel Brisbon, 17, of 2507 Lee Street, Columbia; James Bryant, 18, of 408 Woodcrest Drive, Columbia; and Nicholas Vanover, 20, of 2525 Windsor Road, Cayce, have all been charged with shoplifting, and Neal has the added charges of threatening life of an official and resisting arrest.

According to the incident report, officers responded to Walmart in reference to multiple subjects shoplifting, upon arrival they spoke to a store employee. The employee stated he was showing cellphones to three female subjects when they began to grab cellphones out of the case and place them in their totes. He further stated when that happened, three male subjects began to surround him.

When the employee told the subjects to back up and give him back the cellphones, all six subjects ran out of the store, the reports stated. The employee then chased them, when he got to the parking lot he saw them leave in a black Lexus.

Officers reviewed the video surveillance and observed the three female subjects (Neal, Holmes, Livingston) taking the cellphones, followed by the three male subjects (Brisbon, Bryant and Vanover) walking around the store employee, before they ran out of the store. Further video surveillance showed all subjects shoplifting other items, officials said.

The Newberry County Sheriff’s Office stated they located the vehicle with all six subjects on Highway 26. Officers took the store employee to the location, and he identified the six subjects as the ones who shoplifted. After the officers searched the vehicle, they found multiple boxes of cellphones and totes.

While placing the subjects under arrest, Neal refused to place her hands behind her back after being requested to do so. Officers placed Neal against the car, at which point she threatened harm against the officer, and threatened to spit on the officer, they said.

All six subjects were taken to the Newberry County Detention Center.
