PROSPERITY — Newberry County Sheriff Lee Foster credits alert members of the community and the joint efforts of the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office and State Law Enforcement Division for the rapid arrest of the suspect who fled from a stolen vehicle Thursday.

Tyler Nathaniel Adams, 19, of Street, Leesburg, Ala., was taken into custody by deputies who were using canines and a helicopter to search for him, when two residents saw him go under the front porch of a home to attempt to hide. The residents notified law enforcement in the area and Adams was taken into custody there without incident.

Deputies were called to the scene of a suspicious vehicle Thursday morning on Landing Road at approximately 8:45 a.m. The suspect in the vehicle fled the scene on foot. The deputies gave chase, but the suspect eluded them.

The vehicle was determined to be stolen from Myrtle Beach, law enforcement has taken custody of the vehicle. The tag on the vehicle was the wrong tag and it had been stolen from a vehicle in Mt. Pleasant.

“We are so very grateful to these citizens and for the partnership with have with other law enforcement agencies and with the community,” said Foster. “When the community becomes extra eyes and ears for law enforcement, we will always be better and more effective. If it were not for the great people of Newberry County, we could not enjoy the benefits of being one of the safest counties and having one of the highest clearance rates when crime does occur.”

Adams originally lied to law enforcement about his identity; however, electronic fingerprint records were able to make a positive identification. Adams had several arrests in both Florida and Alabama including burglary, illegal drugs, resisting arrest, and domestic violence.

Adams will be charged with possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of a stolen license plate, simple possession of marijuana, giving false information to police officers, and resisting arrest.
