NEWBERRY – Luis Geraldo Gutierrez, 19, of 1264 Kinard Street in Newberry, was charged with inflicting great bodily injury upon a child on Thursday, June 21.
On Wednesday, June 20, city police officers responded to Newberry County Memorial Hospital in reference to a three-month old child that had been transported by family members due to an injury to the child’s arm.
When officers arrived on scene at 5:30 p.m., they were speaking with family members when a doctor’s examination determined the child’s arm was broken. Police were then advised by nursing staff that the child would be transferred to Palmetto Health Richland for initial evaluation and treatment.
Further evaluation at Palmetto Health Richland determined the child had sustained previous severe injuries to his head and ribs.
Police Chief Roy McClurkin said that although Gutierrez has been arrested, the investigation is still ongoing and involves the Newberry Police Department and the Newberry County Department of Social Services.
“Any case involving injuries to a child no matter whether inflicted by a parent or stranger is very disturbing and uncalled for,” McClurkin said. “My heart goes out to the victim’s families.”
Gutierrez’s bond was set at $50,000.
