Debate to be held next week

NEWBERRY — The Newberry Opera House will serve as the debate stage next Wednesday at 7 p.m. as Gov. Henry McMaster and Greenville businessman John Warren will debate.

The debate will be less than a week before the run off election, where voters will determine which candidate will get the Republican nomination for governor.

“The Opera House is everyone’s House and we welcome all thoughts, views and conversations including providing a place for the foundation of our Republic to happen live and within our community. Newberry and the Opera House are truly part of the South Carolina’s political main stage and voice by thinking Beyond the Tower and being engaged in the conversations of our state through open doors and political events,” said Molly Fortune, Newberry Opera House executive director.

The Debate will be presented by SCETV, The Post and Courier and S.C. Public Radio, in coordination with the South Carolina Republican Party.

During the Statewide primary on Tuesday, McMaster received 42.3 percent of the vote statewide, and Warren received 27.9 percent.

In Newberry County, McMaster received 1,435 votes and Warren received 716.

McMaster is the 117th governor of South Carolina, he is finishing former Governor Nikki Haley’s term after she resigned to serve as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. McMaster has served as lieutenant governor and attorney general for the state.

McMaster’s running mate is businesswoman Pamela Evette.

Warren is the founder and CEO of Lima One Capital, a specialty mortgage finance company. Warren is a Marine that served four years on active duty as an infantry officer.

Warren’s running mate is businessman Pat McKinney.

Anyone interested in attending the debate can call the S.C. Republican Party at 803-988-8440. Tickets are $45 a person, The Newberry Opera House will not be selling tickets for this debate. Anyone attending the debate should be in their seat by 6:30 p.m.

The run off election will be on Tuesday, June 26 from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Only those who voted in the Statewide Primary as a Republican, and those who did not vote at all, are eligible to vote in the run off.
