Cleaning up Newberry in the Great American Clean Up

NEWBERRY — Toward the end of March, the Newberry Soil and Water Conservation District along with Keep Newberry County Beautiful held their first Great American Clean Up for 2018.

During the event volunteers were encouraged to help clean up litter in areas of the City of Newberry. During the day members of the City of Newberry’s Public Works Department picked up areas on Nance, Evans, Wise, Johnstone and College Streets, as well as Louis Rich Road. Mayor Foster Senn along with David Force and Thomas Louis Boyd, city councilmen, also joined in, picking up along Highway 219. Volunteers from Newberry College also pitched in to help clean up parts of the city.

District Coordinator Joseph Berry submitted data from the day to Keep America Beautiful. There were 10 areas that were cleaned/improved, 450 pounds of garbage was collected, five acres of parks, public land, playgrounds, trails were cleared or improved, 25 miles of streets, roads, and highways cleaned and beautified and there were 50 volunteers in total.

“Overall, we had a pretty good turn out and effective event,” Berry said.

This was just the first clean up for Keep Newberry County Beautiful, there will be another Great American Clean Up in the coming months.
