NEWBERRY — A Columbia man has been charged with attempted murder after stabbing an individual during an altercation on Jan. 21.

Isiah Jamel Parter, 24, of 7 Duffie Court, Columbia, is being charged with attempted murder after turning himself in on March 27.

According to the City of Newberry police report, officers responded to the emergency room in reference to a college student being stabbed. Officers made contact with the victim where he informed officers he had been stabbed at Newberry College in the Brokaw parking lot. The victim said he was on the Luther Street side of the parking lot when he was stabbed.

The victim identified the suspect as his ex-girlfriend’s brother, and said Parter came to Newberry College to confront him about an incident that occurred the prior night. The victim further stated he believed Parter was trying to hit him when he was stabbed and fled to Luther Street towards Cromer Hall, with Parter chasing him. Parter then quit chasing him and left the area. Officers confirmed the victim’s statement after reviewing video footage captured by college security, which showed Parter wearing a brown hoodie speaking with the victim in the Brokaw parking lot.

The victim was taken to the emergency room by friends who were all present for the incident. The officers observed a wound on the victim’s left bicep, roughly three to four inches.

Responding officers gathered the victim’s Green North Face jacket for evidence along with written statements from witnesses and video footage of the incident from college security.
