NEWBERRY — The Newberry Fire Department with the help of the S.C. Forestry Service were able to control a low burning fire Saturday at the future home of the City of Newberry recreation complex.
At approximately 10:41 a.m. Saturday, Fire Chief Keith Minick said the fire department was notified by an individual of a possible fire in the area of 1786 Glenn Street Extension. As they investigated the fire, Minick said it appeared to have been burning for a while.
“The forestry service was able to assist with plowing a fire line around the fire to let it burn itself out,” Minick said.
The old cabin on the property was not involved with the fire, Minick said. However, about 9.9 acres total were involved with the fire.
The fire department remained on scene until approximately 2:45 p.m. getting everything cleaned up. Whether it was a discarded cigarette or a previous lightning strike, Minick said the exact cause of the fire wasn’t certain.
