Great American Clean up is Friday

NEWBERRY — With the kick off of spring comes the kick off of the Great American Clean Up, and Keep Newberry County Beautiful will be working with volunteers on Friday to help clean up the City of Newberry.

“The Great American Clean Up picks up a lot of litter, and it sets a standard for the community that we don’t like trash on the roads. I think some of that feeling can carry forward to hopefully result in cleaner streets in the future,” said Mayor Foster Senn.

In the past, KNCB would hold the Great American Clean Up on a Saturday, but District Coordinator Joseph Berry said he wanted to try and attract those who are already in town.

“We can get businesses while they are in work, take some time off to clean up the community. School’s are in session, hopefully we can get classes to get involved with it, trying to provide more opportunity for different people,” he said. “Ideally, I would love for the whole county to be involved, right now, resource wise, we are going to be centered in the City of Newberry. In future events, I’m going to look how I can improve from this one.”

Volunteers can start picking up supplies at 9:30 a.m. in the Piedmont Technical College (1922 Wilson Road) parking lot. Berry will be out there, with the KNCB trailer, giving out supplies, goodies and possibly coffee and doughnuts. Berry will also have signs available for anyone picking up near a street, he requests that they are returned by 4:30 p.m., which is when he’ll pack up for the day.

During the Great American Clean Up, the city Public Works staff will be picking up litter on some of the primary streets, Senn said they do a great job of this year round. Senn, along with Councilman David Force, will also be picking up trash. They plan to pick up on Main Street from CVS up to Lowe’s.

“The one thing we are working through is reporting, trying to get a head count of who volunteers, and how much trash we are able to get rid of. So we ask volunteers to keep in touch with us to report,” Berry said. “I will also be there to sign off on any community service projects, volunteers just need to give me their report and how much they picked up. We are also looking for pictures of them picking up trash to use for marketing promotions.”

During the Clean Up, Berry will have a map and will help assign volunteers to certain areas, but if you have an area in mind Berry said you can clean up that location.
