Newberry College launches exercise science major

NEWBERRY — Newberry College has added a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science major to its programs of study. The new major allows students to explore the science of physical activity and learn how health and healing can be affected by nutrition and exercise.

“Our new exercise science major provides an added dimension to our offerings in the Department of Sport Professions,” said Dr. John Lesaine, chair of the Department of Sport Professions. “We already have strong programs focused on the management and teaching aspects of sport professions; the new major will appeal to students interested in the science of sport and physical movement.”

Students with an exercise science major are equipped with the knowledge and skills for employment right after graduation, in jobs such as exercise physiologist, fitness trainer or conditioning coach. The degree also provides the foundation for students interested in allied health professions, such as physical therapy or chiropractic, which require graduate studies.

“Fitness, health and wellness is a multi-billion industry that continues to grow,” said exercise science professor and program coordinator Rebekah Dixon. “That growth promises new employment opportunities that our students will be ready to pursue with their Newberry College degree.”

Newberry’s Exercise Science major is a four-year, liberal arts degree offered by the Department of Sport Professions, which also offers majors in sport management and physical education. Students can enroll in the Exercise Science major beginning with the fall 2018 semester.
