NEWBERRY – The City of Newberry will hold a celebration for the Newberry High School Lady Bulldogs in recognition of their first state championship win on Sunday, March 18 at 3 p.m. The celebration will be held in Memorial Park in downtown Newberry.

Mayor Foster Senn said the basketball team will arrive downtown Sunday at that time led by a police car escort.

Al de Lachica will host the celebration, Senn said. De Lachica is the announcer on WKDK Radio for Newberry High School basketball games and also called the state championship game for the Lady Bulldogs.

The final minute of two of De Lachica’s call from the game will be played at the celebration, Senn said.

Various local officials will have the chance to offer congratulations and salutes to the team and Lady Bulldogs Coach Melissa Mendenhall will introduce each member of her team and coaches.

“The state championship is a great accomplishment and the community is really proud of the team,” Senn said. “We hope the celebration will be a fun and memorable occasion for the players and coaches.”
