NEWBERRY — Tyriq Goodman, senior at Newberry High School, has signed to play football at Coastal Carolina University. The 18 year old quarterback said he felt like Coastal was the best place for him to be.
“BAM (Be a Man) had a real impact on where I chose, it really met all of my criteria and I felt like I could be the best person I could be at Coastal,” he said.
Goodman explained that BAM is about taking responsibility and standing on your own two feet.
Goodman has been playing football since he was three years old, and when it comes to leaving Newberry High School, Goodman said he will miss his friends who he has been playing with for the last four years.
“It’ll be hard leaving them,” he said. “I’ll miss the people here at Newberry High School, it’s nice, you know a lot of people and you get to be around a lot of people for a certain amount of years, you get use to them.”
While at Newberry High, Goodman participated in Beta Club and other leadership groups. When he attends Coastal, he plans to major in communications, which he said will help him be a sports commentator.
Goodman’s father, Kevin Goodman, said that it is a blessing to see Tyriq finally bear the fruits of his labor.
“Tyriq is our quarterback and he’s going to Coastal Carolina, he’s a two year starter for us and he’s doing a great job, he’s grown. He had to sit the bench as a sophomore behind another quarterback, but he’s grown into a really good quarterback and if he continues to grow he’s going to be an asset to the program,” said Head Coach Phil Strickland.
