Harmon signs to CSU

NEWBERRY — Gabriel Harmon, senior at Newberry High School, has signed to play football, a game he has played since he was eight, as a walk on for Charleston Southern University.

When it comes to choosing CSU, Harmon turned to God for the answer.

“Honestly, it was between them and St. Andrews, and I prayed for about an hour last night, that (CSU) was my number one choice and I just felt like the Lord called me there,” he said. “Great place to be, and I am just excited to start a new chapter.”

The 17 year old Harmon played as an outside linebacker at Newberry High, and he said he will miss the relationships he has made on and off the field.

“I’ll miss the guys, relationships I made with the coaches, players, I’ll miss that most,” he said. “I’ll miss the community here in Newberry, the teachers, everybody loves everybody.”

When it comes to playing at the next level, Harmon said he is looking forward to the relationships he is going to make with his new teammates.

“I am really stoked about being pushed to my limits, working harder, learning more, expanding my knowledge and investing in myself and others,” he said.

While attending Newberry High, Harmon also ran track for a year, played baseball his 10th grade year and was a part of Student Government, Palmetto Boys State and Beta Club.

Harmon plans to major in Biology at CSU, because he loves science and it is a good route for pre-med.

“I’m interested in participating in the Integrated Faith Programs, as well as Student Government, I just want to get involved as soon as possible,” he said.

Head Coach Phil Strickland said he is real proud of Harmon.

“Gabe is a little undersized linebacker who plays really really hard, he’s a great student, he’s getting a lot of academic money and I’m glad he’s continuing his football career, but it is good he is continuing his academic career too,” he said. “He’s going to a good little school and I look forward to seeing him play later on, and I’m real proud of him.”
