NEWBERRY — Local business, Biggyboys BBQ, recently competed in the Southern Barbecue Network Invitational BBQ Championship, in Moncks Corner, and came back champions.

There were four categories during the event, pork, brisket, chicken and ribs. Jamie Monts said they returned as the grand champion and were named team of the year. They also took home first place in pork, fourth place in chicken and sixth place in ribs.

“There were 15 teams that came out, I do not know how many entered, it was by invitation only. These were top teams in the state of South Carolina that won grand champions in other competitions,” Monts said. “We won Pork in the Park not this past year, but the year before.”

The competition took place during the first week of 2018, when Moncks Corner was blanketed in snow. Monts said that on the Friday before the competition the temperature got down to nine degrees. He said they had two heaters running, and it was about 50 degrees inside their trailer. However, he said it was worth it.

Out of the 15 teams competing, 10 of them were the top teams in the state. A comment from those running the competition was that it was some of the best barbecue they have had in the cook off in years.

“One of the guys we beat, he had won six out of the last eight years,” Monts said.

Biggyboys made their barbecue with red sauce, something pretty similar to what they do at Pork in the Park. As for competing in Pork in the Park this year, Monts said they probably will, and they will bring their new trophy along.
