NEWBERRY — National Night Out is upon us once again, giving members of the community the opportunity to meet their neighbors and interact with law enforcement officers that help make our community safe.
National Night Out will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Aug. 1 at Mollohon Park, where the community can enjoy food and fun while interacting with one another.
“National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, caring places to live,” said Newberry Police Sgt. Mike Hawkins. “Basically, it’s designed to provide an opportunity for neighbors to meet one another, increase the interaction and communication between citizens, police and city leader and encourage citizens to become involved in the community.”
Hawkins said that National Night Out is a great event for the community to get involved in, and interact with law enforcement under positive circumstances.
The City of Newberry Police Department, Newberry County Sheriff’s Department, Parks, Recreation and Tourism, Fire Department, E.M.S. and others are involved with putting together National Night Out.
“There’s a lot of negative, especially for police right now, and it’s just for us to try and show that it’s not like that and that the police are here for the greater good and we want, especially children to know that the police are here for them and that’s what this is all about is bringing the kids together and bringing the communities together and have them interact with us,” said Hawkins.
During the event, there will be a dunking booth, PRT will be bringing games with the new Recmobile, a bounce house, corn hole games, ping pong ball drop and food for everyone to enjoy.
National Night Out will also be bringing back Buddy Cards at this year’s event. Kids can get someone from the Police Department, Fire or E.M.S. to sign off their card, which is how they can get entered to win the big prize in the ball drop.
Newberry County Council on Aging will also be providing their shuttle service to and from the event from the city apartment complexes. Anyone being transported via shuttle must be accompanied by an adult.
The shuttle service will be transporting to and from the following apartment complexes:
