NEWBERRY — On June 26, Chapin-Newberry was defeated by Lower Lexington at the Pelion High School baseball field by a 5-3 score.

Lower Lexington took the lead early by scoring 3 runs in the first inning and never relinquished the lead. Chapin-Newberry scored 2 runs in the 3rd inning and one run in the 9th inning on a solo home run by Ward Hacklen. Lower Lexington scored their other 2 runs in the 7th inning, even though Chapin-Newberry had 10 hits to Lower Lexington’s only 3 hits.

Losing pitcher for Chapin-Newberry was Kyle McCary (4 innings) who rendered 2 hits, 3 earned runs while striking out 3 and walking 5, Logan Folk (2 1/3 innings) gave up 2 earned runs, struck out 2, and walked one, and John Steven Trammell (1 1/3 innings) surrendered no hits, struck out 4 and walked one. Completing the battery was Preston Farmer, catching 8 innings and Taylor Wiggins, catching 1 inning.

Leading hitters for Chapin-Newberry were Hacklen and Andrew Livingston with both going 4 for five.

On June 26, Chapin-Newberry swept a double header from West Columbia. Chapin-Newberry took both games from West Columbia with 12-5 and 8-1 scores. Tristan Smaltz was the winning pitcher for the first game tossing up 7 innings, giving up 5 hits, striking out 10 batters and walking only three.

Chandler Todd completed the battery for Chapin-Newberry. Leading batters for Chapin-Newberry were Andrew Livingston (2 for 3 with a home run, Chandler Todd (3 for 5) and Will Kroske (3 for 4), with Ward Hacklen, Trey Kinard and Bryan Helms contributing to 2 hits each.

In the second game, Chapin-Newberry defeated West Columbia by a score of 8-1. Jeb Fulmer earned the win for Chapin-Newberry, pitching 4 innings, giving up 3 hits, striking out 1, and walking 1. Preston Farmer pitched the last 9 outs (3 innings) to earn the save. He gave up 2 hits, struck out 2, and walked none. Completing the battery was Taylor Wiggins and Kyle McCary. No West Columbia batter had more than one hit. Chapin-Newberry only had 6 hits and 5 strikeouts to West Columbia’s 5 hits and 3 strikeouts.

Chapin-Newberry will begin the first round of playoffs at Newberry College on July 5 at 7:30 p.m. against Goose Creek.
