COLUMBIA — The Carolina Stars of the Women’s Minor League Basketball Association (WMLBA) will host free-agent tryouts from 10 a.m to 6 p.m. April 30 at Spring Valley High School, 120 Sparkleberry Lane in Columbia.

Walk-up registration will be available on the morning of April 30 on a first-come, first-serve basis until capacity is reached. Walk-up participants will be required to complete a registration form and pay a $75 nonrefundable registration fee, cash only.

Player check-in will take place from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m and tryouts will be from 12:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. This is the second invitational tryout of the Carolina Stars’ inaugural season. The general public and others interested can watch the tryouts for only $1.

In its first year, the Carolina Stars is one of nine franchise teams in the WMLBA, which will begin its inaugural season this summer. The WMLBA is a minor league basketball association for women designed to help players prepare to play in the WNBA.

“With the USC women’s basketball team winning the NCAA Championship, the arrival of the Carolina Stars couldn’t come at a better time. South Carolina has always been known as a football state but now Dawn Staley and Frank Martin have changed that,” said owner Shamona Nelson. “Basketball in South Carolina has a bright future and the Carolina Stars are looking forward to being a part of that future.”
