NEWBERRY — The Newberry County Sheriff’s Office recently named Brian B. Smith as the recipient of the 2018 Larry Bragg Deputy of the Year Award.

The Larry Bragg Deputy of the Year Award is an award named in recognition of Deputy Lawrence Bragg III, who died in the line of duty in June 1989. The award is presented to a deputy sheriff who has shown dedication, loyalty and leadership above and beyond the call of duty. The individual epitomizes the image of a law enforcement officer and the standards of the Sheriff’s Office. When considered for this award, the quality and quantity of work contributed by the individual, leadership abilities and the overall performance as a commissioned employee was considered. Participation in extra Sheriff’s Office activities and duties were also considered when making this nomination.

A lifetime resident of Newberry County, Smith is a 2011 graduate of Newberry High School. He came to work with the Newberry County Detention Center as a Corrections Officer in 2014, and in that same year, transitioned to the Sheriff’s Office. A July 2015 graduate of the S.C. Criminal Justice Academy, Smith was assigned to the Patrol Division of the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office as a Patrol Deputy. This is where Smith’s skills have been put on full display. Since joining the agency, he has become one of the most active/proactive officers with the sheriff’s office. Smith not only works hard at doing his job, but he is always happy to assist others when/if needed.

Since becoming a member of the organization, Smith has excelled and become a leader with his shift and the agency. He works tirelessly at his job and displays an incredible work ethic, professionalism and humility that makes him even more admired as a great law enforcement officer.

Having been reared in this community, Smith credits his success on the strong bond that he shares with his family. He is the son of Brian B. Smith and Sheila Bates Davenport and has one brother, Trevor Bates.

“Brian has proven himself to be an invaluable employee and an asset to the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office,” said Sheriff Lee Foster.

Adding to this accomplishment, Smith is continuing to work hard to show the commitment and true dedication needed to work in his field, but even more importantly, to also be very good at what he does.
