CAMDEN — After soaring to a team score of 278 (-2) in round one of the South Atlantic Conference Championship at Camden Country Club, the Newberry Wolves came down to Earth on day two, posting a team score of 295 (+15).

Despite slowing down a bit in the second round, the Wolves remain in the lead heading into the final round, holding on to a three-stroke lead over the Queens Royals.

Following a round one performance of 66 (-4), Harry Bolton posted a 73 (+3) today, cutting his lead to one stroke over the second-place competitors. Bolton’s overall score of 139 (-1) has him as the only player shooting under par through the first two rounds. His day was highlighted by a birdie on hole three, but four bogeys ultimately dropped his overall score.

Adrian Villiger closed in on Bolton a bit with his day two performance of 72 (+2), bringing his overall score to 140 (E) after his round one outing of 68 (-2). The sophomore remains in a tie for second place on the individual leader board, sitting only behind Bolton overall. Villiger matched Bolton with four bogeys on the day, but birdies on holes three and 13 helped him to bridge the gap.

Following Villiger in the standings after day two are Ben Thompson and Felipe Garces, who’ve posted identical scores of 147 (+7) through the first two rounds. Thompson, who posted a 71 (+1) in the opening round, struggled on day two thanks in part to a double bogey on hole 14. Along with six bogeys and two birdies on the day, Thompson ultimately posted a day two score of 76 (+6) to fall into a tie for 13th overall in the standings.

Garces remained relatively consistent on day two, posting a 74 (+4) in the second round after posting a 73 (+3) in the opening round, allowing him to advance from a tie for 20th in the standings into a tie for 13th with his teammate Thompson. Garces’ day was highlighted by a pair of birdies on holes four and seven, but six bogeys on the day kept him from advancing further on the leader board.

Closing out the scoring for Newberry was Martin Moreno, who posted the highest score of the day for the Wolves with a 79 (+9) thanks to double bogeys on holes two and 18. After posting a 73 (+3) on day one, Moreno now heads into the final round tied for 30th place in the field of 55 with an individual score of 82 (+12).

The Wolves remain in first place heading into the final round, but Queens was able to gain some ground in the standings with an overall team score of 576 (+16), jumping Coker for the second place spot and landing within three strokes of Newberry. Coker, however, struggled immensely on day two, dropping into third place with an overall team score of 586 (+26).
